How We Plan Honeymoons

Carl Hill JrFounder, Atlas Indeed August 7, 20263 min read

They called us four months before the wedding, which is to say at the worst possible moment: seating charts unresolved, a caterer renegotiating, and the honeymoon still a folder of 40 open tabs neither of them could face.

The first thing we did was close the tabs. Here is what the next four months actually looked like.

One call, two questions

We do not start with destinations. We start with two questions: what should the first morning feel like, and what should the last one? She said the first morning should require nothing of them. He said the last one should be something they would never repeat. That ruled out half the world and pointed at Thailand: a beginning built for exhaustion, an ending built for memory.

The shape of the trip

Nights one through four asked nothing: a quiet island in Phang Nga Bay, breakfast at whatever hour they surfaced, a pool that met the karsts. The middle was Bangkok and the north, temples at dawn and a morning walking beside rescued elephants, because a honeymoon should have one day the wedding guests will never believe.

The last evening was a table on a sandbar that exists for six hours a day, set before they arrived, cleared after they left. Wading back in the dark, she told him it was the best day of the trip. He had known about it for four months and said nothing, which we consider the whole service in miniature.

A honeymoon carries more expectation per day than any trip you will ever take. That is exactly why it should not be planned between a florist call and a fitting.

What the advisor changes

Booking sites can hold a room. They cannot know the wedding date slipped, resequence 10 reservations, or have champagne standing by because the proposal story mentioned a vintage once. We plan a small number of honeymoons deeply rather than many thinly, and we have stood in the properties we send you to. When you are ready, tell us the date and those two questions. We will take it from there.

Good questions

When should we start planning our honeymoon?

6 to 9 months before the wedding for peak seasons and top suites; overwater villas and small islands book out first. 4 months is workable with an advisor; less is a rescue mission we also enjoy.

How much does a honeymoon travel advisor cost?

Our planning is built into the trip: properties compensate us directly, and clients frequently net amenities, upgrades, and credits that exceed any fee model.

Where do honeymoons work best?

Thailand and Greece for the beach-plus-culture two-act structure, the BVI for pure private-island rest, Italy for couples who would rather eat than swim.
