25 Years Later
Their honeymoon, 25 years ago, was six nights in Switzerland they could barely afford: a rail pass, a borrowed camera, one splurge dinner they still argue about the price of.
For the silver anniversary, they asked us for something new. We sent them back instead, and upgraded everything except the memories.
The return, rebuilt
The same lake, a quarter century on. This time the cable car above Lake Lucerne left with one table inside it and a chef plating their starter as the water turned gold below. The rail pass became a private cabin over the Hardangervidda of the Alps: the Gornergrat line, first departure, no one else aboard the terrace car.
And the dinner they once agonized over paying for became lunch at the Gstaad Palace, arrived at over the Col du Pillon with him driving something Italian he had spent 25 years not buying.
The vow, quietly
They had not planned to renew anything. But their last evening was a winemaker’s private cellar in Lavaux, and somewhere between the second and third pour the winemaker withdrew, because we had asked him to, and left them alone with the lake.
He re-proposed with the same words and a better ring. She says yes was easier the second time.
For your own 25th
Return trips are the strongest anniversary play we know: the same country, the version you could not afford then. Where the honeymoon was a beach, we build the vineyard-and-city sequel in Italy; where it was a road trip, we put the road under better keys. A 30th works the same way, with longer nights and no alarm set anywhere on the itinerary.
An anniversary trip is not about somewhere new. It is about proving the first decision right.

Good questions
Where should we go for a 25th versus a 30th anniversary?
The 25th favors the return trip: your honeymoon destination, done properly. The 30th favors the never-yet: the safari, Japan, or the month-long journey the calendar finally allows.
When is the best time to book an anniversary trip?
8 to 12 months ahead if the date is fixed; anniversary weeks cannot slide, so the right property must be held early.
