Three Generations, One Trip

Carl Hill JrFounder, Atlas Indeed August 11, 20263 min read

The call came from the family’s planner, as it usually does: one grandmother turning 75, two sets of parents, four grandchildren from 6 to 17, and 11 opinions about everything except the dates.

The brief underneath the chaos was simple. Find one place where nobody has to compromise. We chartered them an expedition yacht in the Galápagos.

Why the Galápagos solves the math

A multigenerational trip fails at the logistics layer: who drives, who waits, who is bored. A small expedition yacht deletes the layer entirely. The hotel moves while you sleep. Every morning there is a new island, a naturalist who handles the plan, and a choice between the hike, the snorkel, and the deck.

The 6-year-old counted sea lion pups. The 17-year-old, who had announced she would hate it, filled a camera card by day two. The grandmother watched albatrosses from a shaded panga seat, 10 feet from her grandchildren and exerting nothing.

The one table that matters

Every family reunion trip needs its dinner: the night that becomes the photograph. Ours was the crew’s barbecue on the top deck, anchored off an island with no name anyone could remember, when the 17-year-old gave a toast nobody had assigned her.

The planner of a family trip is the most valuable client we have, because she is doing the hardest job in travel. Our work is taking it off her.

Other rooms that fit 11 people

Exclusive-use safari lodges in South Africa run a close second: private vehicles by household, a shared table by night, and malaria-free reserves for families with small children. For reunions that need a villa rather than a voyage, a Tuscan estate with a chef gives every generation a wing and one long lunch to meet in the middle.

Good questions

Who pays for a multigenerational trip?

Most often the grandparents host the trip and adult children cover flights, but we structure invoices any way the family prefers, including fully split billing nobody has to discuss at dinner.

What is the ideal group size and setup?

8 to 16 travels best. Below that a villa works; above 10, a chartered yacht or exclusive-use lodge keeps everyone together without anyone sharing a wall.

Is the Galápagos suitable for older travelers?

Yes, with the right vessel: panga rides replace long walks, activities are always optional, and naturalists tailor each landing to mobility.
