The 50th Birthday Trip

Carl Hill JrFounder, Atlas Indeed August 13, 20263 min read

She told me she did not want a party. Her husband had already floated the rented villa, the caterer, the 80 guests, and she had said the same thing to him she said to me: I do not want to turn 50 in a room.

What she wanted, it turned out after one phone call, was to turn 50 somewhere that made 50 feel small. We sent them to Zimbabwe.

Why a safari at 50

A landmark birthday trip has one job: to be unrepeatable. A beach can be lovely and a city can be brilliant, but neither says this year is different. Standing in an open vehicle while 400 elephants come down to drink says it plainly.

We booked them onto a 123,000-acre private reserve 40 minutes from Victoria Falls, where the game drives run on their clock, not a park schedule. Day one was the falls from the air. Day four was a walking safari. The birthday itself we kept empty on the itinerary, which made them nervous until it happened.

The empty day

On the evening she turned 50, their guide drove them to a waterhole and stopped. Staff had been there an hour earlier: a table, white linen, lanterns, her favorite champagne, which her husband had mentioned to us once, in passing, in March.

Elephants came down to the far bank as the light went. Nobody sang. Nobody made a speech. She told me afterward it was the first birthday she could remember where she felt the year change.

Where else 50 lands well

Not every 50th is a safari. We have marked them with a hosted round at Royal Melbourne for a golfer who thought his list was unreachable, a dinner alone in the desert under Uluru, and a chartered week in the Cyclades for a woman who wanted her closest six friends and no plan at all.

The pattern holds: choose the thing that has waited 20 years, and build the week around one unrepeatable evening. Then leave that evening alone.

A 50th should not be louder than the other birthdays. It should be larger.

Good questions

How far in advance should I plan a 50th birthday trip?

9 to 12 months for peak safari season, private access, or top properties; 6 months is workable elsewhere. The best rooms and guides book first.

What is the best destination for a 50th birthday safari?

Private reserves in Zimbabwe, Botswana, or Tanzania: they allow night drives, walking safaris, and private sundowner setups no national park can host.

Should we bring friends or keep it to the two of us?

Both work; decide before you pick the destination. A couples trip favors a private reserve or the desert; a group favors a chartered yacht or an exclusive-use lodge.
