Weather

In June, Lima experiences comfortable, favorable, and warm weather with temperatures ranging from 65°F to 72°F.

The same holds for Sacred Valley, Cusco, and Machu Picchu, where you can expect daily high temperatures of around 66°F, rarely falling below 64°F or exceeding 68°F. Notably, the temperature drops significantly at night due to high altitudes with low temperatures ranging from 32°F to 39°F.

The main difference here will be the Peruvian Amazon with its tropical, warm and humid climate. Here, daytime temperatures range from 20-27°C (69-81°F). It’s still part of the dry season, so rainfall is less frequent, but the rainforest remains lush and green. The weather is generally favorable for wildlife viewing and exploring the jungle.

Lima

This exciting metropolis on the Pacific Ocean is full of character. It has a booming culinary scene, urban pre-Columbian pyramids, modern art galleries that will dazzle you and colorful neighborhoods ideal for strolls. It was the “City of Kings” to the Spanish conquistadors. Today it’s a city of contrasts: shanty towns rub shoulders with skyscrapers, high-end restaurants with street food, ancient temples sit among colonial churches, and bumper-to-bumper traffic leads to sheer cliffs and endless horizons.

Recommendation: Belmond Miraflores Spa

Lima Restaurant Recommendations

No visit to Lima is complete without delving into the food scene. Here are some of our favorite restaurants:

El Chinito | Sánguches are an important part of Peruvian culture. Chinese immigrant Félix Yong opened this traditional sangucheria in 1960. The signature sandwich is the chicharrón: a French baguette filled with fried pork that’s both crunchy and juicy, topped with sweet potato, yellow-pepper sauce, salsa criolla and pickled purple onions.

Your Stay: Belmond Miraflores Park

Why we love it for you: Step into this urban oasis and feel a sense of serenity descend. Here, Lima’s contemporary spirit and vibrant social scene is paired with the pinnacle of Limeño luxury. Ascend to the rooftop for spectacular views of the Pacific ocean to frame your morning coffee. Or dine divinely at Tragaluz, their celebrated restaurant where culinary theater is a way of life. Between curated experiences to uncover the capital’s beauty and indulgent treatments using organic Peruvian Amazon ingredients at our Zest Spa, Miraflores Park is the ultimate base to unlock Lima.

Journey to Peru

Description

From intricate tapestries to architectural marvels, Peru is home to one of South America’s most sophisticated ancient civilizations with over 5000 years of history to its name. The Incas left a legacy of agricultural ingenuity, spiritual wisdom, masterful artwork and elaborate cuisine that can still be appreciated to this day. Take a journey through Cusco, Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu to get immersed in Peru's heritage and spectacular natural beauty.

Trip Overview

Travel Requirements

You don’t need a visa for Peru if you have a United States passport.

The US Travel Advisory for Peru usually recommends yellow fever shots and malaria-preventive medication for tourists traveling to rainforest regions. Please consult your doctor before visiting the Amazon Basin.

These guidelines are for reference only.

Pre-Trip Information

Luggage Allowance

The luggage allowance for domestic flights is 1 x 23kg checked luggage & 1 x 10kg carry on per person.

Packing Suggestions

  • Passport and flight tickets; after you’ve been given your tourist ticket by Peruvian customs, you’ll need to have this and your passport at most hotels and attractions, including on treks
  • Secure day bag with enough space for camera gear, water bottle/s, poncho and snacks (pack toilet paper in your day bag as many Peruvian bathrooms don’t have it)
  • Backpack to take hiking
  • Raingear (back-up gear is a good idea)

Altitude Sickness Prevention

In the Sacred Valley, you will encounter altitudes of 9,000 feet and greater. In order to prevent the onset of altitude sickness, we recommend the following:

  • Do not drink alcohol or do heavy exercise for at least the first 48 hours after you arrive at an elevation above 8,000 feet.
  • Drink 3-4 quarts of water per day and maintain a diet that’s more than 70% carbohydrates leading up to and while you are at these higher elevations.

Helpful Phrases

A few Spanish phrases to try during your trip are:

  • Hello : ¡Hola! (oh-lah)
  • Good morning : ¡Buenos días! (bweh-nos dee-ahs)
  • Good afternoon :¡Buenas tardes! (bweh-nahs tar-dehs
  • Good evening : ¡Buenas noches! (bweh-nahs noh-chehs)

Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

Luggage

It is important that you bring only necessary clothing and equipment to the lodge in your carry-on luggage. Due to weight and space limitations on the boat, passenger luggage is limited to 10 kg (22 lbs) per person. Additional luggage can be kept in the hotel’s storage at Puerto Maldonado. Luggage not needed during your rainforest stay can be stored at the hotel’s storage in Puerto Maldonado.

Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica is located on the steep banks of Peru’s winding Madre de Dios River, in a private ecological reserve deep in the Amazon Basin Rainforest. Guests enjoy a delightful combination of simplicity and luxury. The 35 lantern lit, palm-thatched cabañas, designed in the fashion of local Ese’ Eja-style huts, are appointed with comfortable beds swathed in mosquito netting, log chairs, and a writing table, plus umbrellas, lanterns, and a complete set of natural toiletries. Each room has a spacious siesta porch with hammocks. Each suite and superior room is equipped with fans, hot water, and limited electricity. There is no internet access, but in case of an emergency, please contact your host.

Tambopata National Reserve

A rainforest is an expansive territory with high annual rainfall, very dense plant growth, and a relatively warm temperature. It is natural habitat for two thirds of the world’s plant and animal diversity, and it is believed that there are hundreds of millions more species yet to be discovered in this environment. The Tambopata National Reserve – adjacent to Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica & Amazon Field Station byInkaterra – is one of the few easily accessible virgin tropical rainforests in the world. The reserve, with its 274,690-hectare (678,774-acre) area, is known for its mega biodiversity as well as its magnificent natural landscapes. Puerto Maldonado, known as the “Capital of Biodiversity,” is the largest city of the Tambopata Region. Overlooking the confluence of the Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers, Puerto Maldonado is 400 meters (1,312 feet) above sea level, 650 km (404 miles) away from Cusco.

Though the rainforest is known to host a vast number of species, animals tend to hide away from human presence, making opportunities to observe them variable and unpredictable. Nevertheless, the region’s diverse plant life offers an endless opportunity for discovery; the lakes and wetlands invite exploration, and the varied rainforest ecosystems hold the promise of new insight and understanding.

The richness of the Amazon Basin creates a spectacular scenario for bird watching and other eco-friendly activities. Some 590 different bird species, including toucans, tanagers, flycatchers and colorful macaws, have been sighted around the reserve. Due to the region’s tropical climate it is common to observe exotic insects. Tropical rainforests have been called the “earth’s lungs” as these are essential for oxygen production and carbon sequestration. The rainforest has also been called the “world’s largest pharmacy,” because of the many natural medicines found there. For a complete and updated list of animals and recent sightings please visit www.inkaterra.com.

Amazon Field Station by Inkaterra

A knowledgeable experience for scientists, students, volunteers and eco-conscious travelers, Amazon Field Station byInkaterra welcomes guests to be part of diverse research and conservation projects overseen by NGO Inkaterra Asociación. Interactive excursions include a Palmetum with the most complete sample of native palms; a bio-orchard with crops nurtured with ancestral agroforestry techniques; a bird banding station; and a motion-sensitive camera trap system to study wildlife in hotel grounds, such as ocelots, giant armadillos, tapirs, peccaries and tamanduas. With four cabanas and two large pavilions, Amazon Field Station byInkaterra houses an Eco-Center and a lab for native flora and fauna analysis. Every room is equipped with fans, hot water, and limited electricity.

Food & Beverages

Inspired by the tropical flavors of the Amazon region, meals and beverages are prepared with fresh local ingredients. All meals include a variety of proteins, salads and fruits, as well as a selection of homemade breads. Inkaterra uses filtered river water that can be used for showers but is not safe to drink. Bottled drinking water is provided to all guests.

Good To Know

At Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica and Amazon Field Station byInkaterra, rooms and cabañas have no locks – the lodge relies on security guards onsite 24 hours a day. All rooms and cabañas have a locked drawer in case you need to secure any valuables. Nonetheless, we suggest that you leave valuables in your locked suitcases. Inkaterra Resserva Amazonica has a safe deposit box located inside the onsite shop, should you wish to use it.

Cell Service at Amazonica

Welcome

You host from Inkaterra Amazonica will discuss your activity options for the next few days for your stay in the Amazon and assist you with check-in.

You will enjoy your activities with a private guide.

Tambopata National Reserve, The Peruvian Amazon

Towering trees, dense vegetation, winding rivers, and hidden oxbow lakes create a vibrant ecosystem that supports an astonishing variety of wildlife, including jaguars, macaws, sloths, and colorful butterflies. Home to indigenous communities that have inhabited these lands for generations, the Peruvian rainforest remains a treasure trove of natural wonders and cultural heritage, offering an unforgettable adventure for those seeking to immerse themselves in the untamed beauty and primal allure of this ecological wonderland.

Settling In

After a short briefing, settle into your palm-thatched cabaña. After lunch, retreat to your rustic-luxury cabin for a nap or a swing in your hammock before choosing from the wide range of a-la-carte guided excursions with your expert Inkaterra Explorer Guide, who can assist in determining the best activities tailored to your family.

We recommend walking along the Trail System for an immersive introduction into the intricate biodiversity of the Amazon basin and the layers of the rainforest. Walk along towering trees, like the Shihuahuaco, as your ears tune in to the croaks, rustles and calls of the exotic wildlife inhabiting this rich ecosystem. There are excellent opportunities for birding and observing an abundance of flora. Keep your camera ready just in case sloths or monkeys appear on the treetops.

This is a recommendation only. You’ll confirm and co-ordinate your experiences with your hotel directly. Please note, activities are subject to change due to weather conditions and other factors.

Afternoon – Twilight River

In the late afternoon, we highly recommend taking the gentle Twilight River excursion to witness the jungle transform from a diurnal to a nocturnal world: where daytime animals and birds give way to species specially adapted to the darkness of the night. You may also be able to spot the likes of nightjars, owls, capybaras and caimans lurking on the riverbanks.

Day 11: The Amazon

The morning in the rainforest unveils a symphony of vibrant sounds, as the sun’s rays pierce through the lush canopy, awakening a diverse array of wildlife in their natural paradise.

The sunlight squeezes through the dense trees as jungle inhabitants awake
from their slumber. Optionally join them in the early hours, with buffet breakfast served from 5 am.

Morning – Lake Sandoval

The sunlight squeezes through the dense trees as jungle inhabitants awake from their slumber. Optionally join them in the early hours, with buffet breakfast served from 05:30am.

Visit Lake Sandoval this morning, a glassy, ox-bow lake located inside the protected Tambopata National Reserve, reached via a sun-dappled rainforest trail. Board a dug-out wooden canoe to quietly paddle through a stream and glide onto Lake Sandoval, flanked by picture-perfect palms. This serene lake is home to many species of birds, the endangered giant river otter, red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles, black caimans amongst others.

Lunch

Return to Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica in time for lunch.

Afternoon – Canopy Walkway

We recommend climbing the exhilarating Inkaterra Canopy Walkway. The Canopy Walkway is a sophisticated and safe network, distributed over seven ecologically constructed hanging suspension bridges, strung between eight treetop observation platforms above the forest floor. This is an unforgettable opportunity to observe the rainforest from the rooftop and gain a sense of its size. Ascend the first vertiginous tower 38 metres (124 feet) above ground, keeping an eye out for bright toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys and the three-toed sloth.

After descending, enjoy a 30-minute Anaconda Walk that follows a
200-meter (656 feet) raised wooden platform over a flooded aguajales swamp. In this lush ecosystem you may observe various species of amphibians, birds, mammals, abundant flora and interesting trees.

This is a recommendation only. You’ll confirm and coordinate your experiences with your hotel directly.

Back at the lodge, you can opt to enjoy a daily nature presentation in the Eco Centre.
